Emotional Intelligence

In a March 6th posting in her blog site, Penelope Trunk discusses the increasing importance of emotional intelligence when getting a new job.
She introduces Northeastern University College of Business Administration teaching project management in three areas: planning, team management, and negotiation. Brendan Bannister stresses the importance of personal assessment. “Personal assessment is all the rage at business schools right now,” says Professor Bannister. Ken Barnet, a vice president at State Street Global Research, presents the significance of soft skills in the hiring process. "MBA students we employ as business analysts don't need to come into our company being a finance guru, able to espouse the latest financial theories," Mr. Barnet said. "What's much more important is that they know how to analyze issues and communicate recommendations." Mr. Barnet is one of over two dozen corporate executives who helped CBA retool the MBA this year.

He said that this is actually a positive move by RIM. "In reality, this is a wonderful thing. They found the problem, it's not a real problem, and assuming they found all of the problems, shareholders can be aware of it, and they're boosting their financial credibility rather than being tainted," said Professor Sherman.

Leasing Roads

In a March 4th article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, entitled, “Spinning toll roads' asphalt into gold,” by Paul Nussbaum, he denotes that Pennsylvania and New York are considering leasing their toll roads to private companies. The length of the lease is in question and compared to other states lease lengths. Professor Joseph Giglio from Northeastern University's College of Business Administration feels that this is not an appropriate comparison due to a "a lack of transparency in the previous transactions."

In the March 2007 edition of Bank Technology News, the reporter explores the issue of a fairly large knowledge gap in health savings accounts.
