The Success of Hedge Funds

A recent article in Money Management Executive discusses a study of the comparison of a new class of hedge funds and traditional mutual funds, co-authored by Nicole Boyson.

In the February 5th edition, a story entitled, “Hedged Mutual Funds Make The Grade,” by Lori Pizzani, discusses the results of a study that tested three hypothesis between 1994 and 2004 between hedged mutual funds and regular mutual funds. “I was pleasantly surprised by the results,” said Nicole Boyson, assistant professor of finance at the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University, the study’s co-author. “Hedged mutual funds outpaced traditional mutual funds, but I was surprised by how much.” The study also found that those funds run by current or former managers of traditional hedge funds – versus mutual fund portfolio managers with no hedge fund experience – have a tendency to outperform on a persistent basis.

Open Source Programs in E-Commerce

A recent article was written on whether e-commerce can keep up with open source programs in E-Commerce Times. The article gives a brief history of the growth of e-commerce and how the introduction of open source programs have paved the way for e-commerce.

Open source programs have a long way to go. Eilon Reshef, vice president of product management and co-founder of WebCollage, agrees that open source programming still has a long way to go before being fully implemented in the e-commerce space. Open source tools range from content via Apache Server to a variety of back end applications, he noted.
"We are still not seeing the breadth of tools that other domains have available. E-commerce is still at the Web 1.0 level. It is still too new. Other Internet businesses are further along in Web 2.0 technology," Reshef told LinuxInsider. Webcollage develops enhanced product marketing tools for online vendors.

The Difficulties of Forecasting The Return on Design

In a February 2007 Fast Company article, “No Accounting For Design?,” by Bill Breen, Associate Professor of Accounting Julie Hertenstein and Professor of Accounting Marjorie Platt indicate that the work involved on forecasting the return on design is burdensome. “First, it's incredibly difficult to untangle design's contribution from all of the business drivers--engineering, manufacturing, distribution, marketing--that ultimately fuel a product's performance in the marketplace. Then there's the accounting problem: Design investments are immediately written off as expenses. Months (or years) later, when a product finally hits shelves, companies are loath to retrieve the data necessary to calculate returns,” says Professor Hertenstein and Platt.

M & A Firm Gives a few thoughts on Budgeting Strategies

In a CIO Insight article on how BPM can help with strategic planning and budgeting, Murray Beach, President of Boston Corporate Finance, gives his insight on the importance of keeping it accurate.
"Managers and boards of directors are constantly evaluating their own performance, and the company's, against the budget, so the accuracy of the budget as it's being drawn up is essential," says Beach. "As businesses become more complex, the challenge of making the budget accurate and transparent has expanded tremendously."
